The Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maryland, College Park and the Maryland Campus of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) are integrated as a single unit housed in the Avrum Gudelsky Veterinary Center, University of Maryland College Park Campus. The mission of our unit is to protect and improve the health of animals and the people of Maryland, the United States and the global community through

  1. The provision of exemplary educational programs to under-graduate, graduate and professional students.
  2. Conducting “cutting edge” research programs in animal and public health.
  3. Providing outstanding Extension and Continuing Education programs.

Our institution ranks in the top tier of animal and public health research centers in the nation, consistently producing new discoveries in the areas of virology, bacteriology, immunology, epidemiology and vaccinology by outstanding faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and facilities. Our advantageous location in the Baltimore-Washington corridor allows us active collaboration with nearby research centers, including federal institutions (NIH, USDA, FDA), several other nationally-ranked universities and biomedical centers, and private industries involved in ground-breaking research on highly-pathogenic animal and human diseases. Over the coming years, we are committed to providing excellent educational programs, conducting innovative research in infectious diseases, and serving as a catalyst for the dissemination of new knowledge in fields related to infectious diseases with global impact.
